Askhat’s roots lie in Kazakhstan, a country of vast steppes in the center of Eurasia. In 2019 he graduated from the Wageningen University & Research with a MSc degree in Management, Economics and Consumer Studies (MME) and a specialization in Business Economics. “Before entering the WUR, I had experience working in corporate credit risk management. During my work, I enjoyed agri-food business projects the most. Therefore, I went to Wageningen, determined to extend my knowledge in managing economic and business risks in livestock farming and running sustainable farming operations,” Askhat says.

During his studies, he decided to embed the MSc Track Entrepreneurship in his program, which brought him in contact with StartHub. He participated in the Ideation and Realisation programs, which StartHub offers for students interested in entrepreneurship. Askhat even won a Startup Week competition in February 2019. “Those events helped me a lot in shaping and structuring my initial business idea. At StartHub, I was happy to meet a lot of scientifically savvy and entrepreneurially minded people. Besides that, I found partners within the StartHub expert panel. It was a great time. I was able to combine my study and courses on entrepreneurship in agri-food, while learning a lot from a surrounding environment of a leading country in agri-food production. This productive ground helped me to make the first steps towards realization of my idea, into the startup we named COWMAS.”

The mission of COWMAS is to help cattle farmers to run efficient and sustainable farming by supporting their activities with advanced cattle management technology. “We’re an agritech software startup company with our own hardware product. We’re developing a platform connected to smart cattle ear tag sensors. Farmers benefit from this by being able to control their cattle that is grazing in remote pastures, monitor work of hired herders 24/7 and optimize many other livestock operations”, Askhat explains.

According to the FAO, more than 1.3 billion people worldwide are dependent on livestock to sustain their livelihood. 60% of the world's agricultural land is grazing land, supporting about 360 million cattle. A large proportion of this is farmed in developing countries, on rangelands, and often without access to contemporary knowledge and timely services. “The further development of these countries will require the production of more products with fewer resources, especially land. The penetration of free-range cattle farming practices by information communication technologies, in my opinion, is an inevitable process that can foster efficient & sustainable production and support the lives of many people. I see huge business opportunities there. This is what drives me, to create a product that will bring efficiency, knowledge and services to farmers in very remote areas of the globe. And my home country Kazakhstan is a good starting point for that!“, he says.

Meanwhile, the startup has achieved some milestones. Recently, the first software prototype has been developed by the COWMAS team and demonstrator ear tag sensors have been assembled with the help of their partner, a hardware company from the StartHub community. “Since December, I am actively traveling to farms in Kazakhstan to validate our proposition, talk with them and define their needs. What we found is that there’s a growing interest among cattle farmers to explore the course of automatic identification of cattle. We are in the process of firmware coding for tags. We’re also improving our platform now, so farmers will be able to use the COWMAS app to keep track of animal records, before even getting smart cattle ear tags” Askhat says.

“With funds, our team can develop hardware (ear tag sensors), check the functionality of basic technology and test the value proposition with cattle farmers. The student start-up loan came just in time! I would like to thank StartHub and StartLife for their programs and supporting me, even after graduating from WUR. Special gratitude goes to Tim Daalderop, he’s a great startup incubator and business coach!”

To the final question of what the future plans of COWMAS are, Askhat answers: “We have lots of ambitious plans! In 2021 we want to complete prototyping and develop the commercial version of COWMAS’ tags and platform. We will do field tests in spring, by tagging free grazing cattle in Kazakhstan. We’ll continue working with farmers to get their validation and feedback, that will help us to improve our services. Another milestone will be raising seed funds to support our further growth. We’re excited to cooperate further with WUR for research on cattle behavior and remote monitoring of animals!”

FarmVent is an agri-tech start-up that focuses on vertical farming, developing turnkey modular automated farms for herbs and leafy greens. Growth is controlled by a combination of Internet of Things (IoT) technology, machine learning and data science. “We want to enable growers and retailers to grow in-store everywhere, minimizing the food miles. We believe – now more than ever – that food production should get closer to the consumer, with transparent procedures & food security without food waste. We are passionate about innovation and sustainability and by combining these two things in our project we want to create a more sustainable future in the supply chain of herbs,” Nikolaos explains.

It all started when Nikolaos decided to combine the MSc Track Entrepreneurship with his MSc Biosystems Engineering at the WUR. “I followed courses about business for agri-food and how to get from your idea to a business plan. This gave me a push to start something. Also a role played the support of StartHub and the Realisation Bootcamp, with mentoring and guidance in this whole entrepreneurial trip,” he says.

The startup achieved some milestones so far. The FarmVent team participated in this year’s WUR Urban Greenhouse Challenge 2; where student teams were challenged to come up with a concept to bring professional food production back into urban neighbourhoods, integrating social, economic, environmental and technical aspects. The teammates won the Partners’ Prize with their proposal. Last month, FarmVent represented the WUR in the Dutch 4TU Impact Challenge, in which teams from 4 technical universities in the Netherlands presented their innovation, competing for prizes. What are Nikolaos and his team up to next? “The Student Start-up Loan we received, gave us a push in finishing our prototype. Now we are ready to plan and run our first pilot with customers,” he says. “We hope to be able to have our first instalment with retailers by 2021.” The StartHub team looks forward to seeing your startup develop!

Aria Samimi from InsectSense

A few weeks ago, some startups from our community received a Student Start-Up Loan! The Student Start-Up Loan is offered by StartLife and StartHub Wageningen to students with a promising business idea. The loan gives students the opportunity to accelerate their first business activities. In the upcoming weeks, you can expect a little interview with each of the startups. What is their company’s mission? Why did they become an entrepreneur? Where will they use the loan for and what are their future plans? This week, we’ll introduce you to Aria Samimi, the founder of InsectSense!

Intro Student Loan ontvangers.png

To the question why he decided to become an entrepreneur, Aria answers: “I didn’t become an entrepreneur, I was born to be an entrepreneur [laughs]. Nature is a source of inspiration for me and science is the key to explore that. A science-based entrepreneur is someone who turns that key, opens the door, and influences people's lives by implementing that science in their lives. Doing this gives me energy and happiness.” In the beginning of this year, Aria founded InsectSense, a science-tech venture that explores the possibilities of applying insect-behaviour and its underlying molecular biology to the field of bio-sensing. The aim is to translate this research into diagnostic solutions that could be used for the betterment of mankind.

“So far, we’ve built the prototype of an insect-based diagnostic device that can be one of the fastest, non-invasive, most accurate and cost-efficient technologies for detection of diseases at an early stage in humans, animals and plants”, Aria explains. Soon he and his team are going to test the possibility of early detection of COVID-19 with their devices. Aria plans to invest part of the Student Start-Up Loan he received in identifying the IP strategy of the company. The rest of the loan will go into development of their prototype and technology, which they will be busy with in the upcoming months. “Besides that, we’ll be validating various applications of our platform-technology, writing proposals and fundraising, fundraising and fundraising…”, he says. The StartHub team wishes you the best of luck!

Nick Wezenbeek from CleverMove

A few weeks ago, some startups from our community received a Student Start-Up Loan! The Student Start-Up Loan is offered by StartLife and StartHub Wageningen to students with a promising business idea. The loan gives students the opportunity to accelerate their first business activities. In the upcoming weeks, you can expect a little interview with each of the startups. What is their company’s mission? Why did they become an entrepreneur? Where will they use the loan for and what are their future plans? Today, we’ll introduce you to Nick Wezenbeek, the owner of CleverMove!

Intro Nick Wezenbeek - CleverMove SSL-3.png

With his company CleverMove, Nick coaches older adults in maintaining a strong & vital body, based on recent scientific knowledge. The ultimate long-term goal is to remain self-reliant. “In the scientific world, there is a tremendous amount of knowledge available on effective exercise and nutritional strategies to keep older adults vital and self-reliant. However, I observed that this knowledge is often not optimally applied in practice, resulting in suboptimal trainings and advices. This is a pity, because a well-designed science-based training program accompanied by minor adjustments in nutrition, has been shown to be extremely effective in increasing muscle quality, strength, health and the ability to perform daily activities. That’s why I decided to start CleverMove”, says Nick. With his scientific background in training and nutrition for elderly adults, as well as over 15 years of experience as a sports instructor, he creates effective and scientifically based programs. Besides effectiveness, Nick pays a lot of attention to the social aspect of training. Participants exercise in a homelike setting, with peers at their own level.

And that is very much appreciated by his clients. The company celebrated their 1-year existence last January. At that time, 56 customers were using the CleverMove services and rated their satisfaction with the coaching as 9/10! In March, CleverMove was forced to close its doors due to the coronavirus outbreak. Nick decided to set up an online program, which was very well received by his customers. “With the corona virus still among us, prolonged inactivity makes older adults even more vulnerable to for example infection and a more severe disease course of COVID-19. Therefore, the need for effective programs, specifically tailored for older adults has increased”, he explains. The Student Start-Up Loan he received a few weeks ago, enables him to develop ‘CleverMove Weerbaar 50+/70+’, a scale up of the CleverMove online program, on short term. “With a budget for advertising and promotion and the help of an experienced communications advisor, the online program will be launched around Christmas time. It will be promoted and available to all elderly people in the Netherlands, which is very exciting!”

Thanks to his loyal customers and changes in the program (outdoor and online training) CleverMove can continue to exist, despite the major impact of COVID-19. In the future, Nick wants to continue to run the online program for Dutch elderly people. “Besides that, I’m playing with the idea of eventually opening a CleverMove sports location in a big city. Or perhaps even a chain of CleverMove locations, who knows! I would also like to make the link back to science. Collecting long-term data in practice is very valuable. Research projects often only observe participants for a few months, while CleverMove could track a large group of elderly people for years in a real-life setting.”
